Vishu — महत्त्वम्
Vishu is the Malayalam New Year celebrated in Kerala. The day begins with Vishukkani—viewing auspicious items first thing in the morning to ensure a prosperous year.
Vishu — महत्त्वम्
Vishu marks the Sun's transition into Medam (Mesha/Aries). The Vishukkani is set up the previous night so that the first sight upon waking is auspicious. It is also associated with Krishna and the legend of Narakasura's defeat.
Vishu — पूजाविधिः
- The previous night, set up Vishukkani (gold, rice, fruits, flowers, mirror, lamp) in the puja room.
- At dawn, wake and view Vishukkani with closed eyes, then open them to see the auspicious items first.
- Wear new clothes (Vishu kodi); give Vishukkaineetam (money/gifts) to younger family members.
- Prepare Vishu sadya and visit the temple; burst firecrackers in some regions.
