अक्षयतृतीया — "अविनाशिनी तृतीया" — वर्षस्य परमशुभदिनेषु अन्यतमम्। वैशाखशुक्लतृतीयायां पाल्यते। अस्मिन् दिने प्रारब्धस्य कस्यापि पुण्यकार्यस्य फलं न क्षयते इति पुराणानि वदन्ति। स्वर्णक्रयणं, दानं, नूतनकार्याणां आरम्भः च अस्मिन् दिने परमोत्तमानि। त्रेतायुगस्य आरम्भतिथिः; महर्षिणा व्यासेन अस्मिन्नेव दिने महाभारतस्य लेखनं प्रारब्धम्। भगवतः परशुरामस्य अवतरणमपि अस्यामेव तिथौ।

According to the Mahabharata, the Pandavas received the Akshaya Patra from the Sun god on this day. It is also associated with the beginning of the Treta Yuga and the day when the Ganga descended to earth. Lord Krishna blessed Sudama on Akshaya Tritiya.
